Are You Suffering With Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

If you’re experiencing pelvic pain, pressure, or issues with bladder or bowel control, it’s very tempting to think it’s nothing—that it will just go away on its own. Or you might dismiss it as something “everyone your age” deals with, or assume it’s just a normal part of life…

There’s often no obvious reason why it started, or maybe it developed gradually after pregnancy, surgery, or changes in activity—but the symptoms just aren’t improving.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and we hear this all the time. In fact, Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, Urinary Incontinence, and Pelvic Pain are among the most common problems we help people with in our physical therapy clinic here in Naples, FL.

What Is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

Pelvic floor dysfunction is far more common than most people realize, affecting both men and women at various stages of life. At Freedom Physical Therapy and Fitness, we help people who experience issues such as bladder leakage, bowel urgency, postpartum pain, pelvic pressure, and pelvic muscle weakness – problems that often go untreated because many individuals feel embarrassed or unsure where to turn.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles responsible for supporting the bladder, bowels, and reproductive organs. These muscles must contract and relax properly for healthy bathroom habits, core stability, sexual function, and pain-free movement. When the pelvic floor becomes weak, tight, or uncoordinated, people may experience incontinence, pelvic pain, difficulty holding urine or stool, or a constant feeling of urgency.

Many individuals assume these symptoms are just part of “getting older” or something they need to live with, but that is not true. Pelvic floor dysfunction is highly treatable through conservative, noninvasive therapy.

What are the symptoms of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

Pelvic floor dysfunction can present in several ways depending on which muscles are affected and how severe the dysfunction is. Common symptoms include:

These symptoms can disrupt everyday life, making long trips, family visits, workdays, or simple errands stressful and unpredictable. Tasks that used to be easy – such as visiting relatives in Tampa or running errands around town – may suddenly require multiple bathroom stops, planning, or avoidance altogether. Over time, this can impact mental health, social activities, intimacy, and overall confidence.
